What is Crude Oil Heater?

Crude oil heater is a special oilfield equipment designed to increase the feed temperature of feed crude oil to required level for efficient separation in upstream equipment, avoiding fouling due to the waxes present in crude. Crude oil heater consists of several equipment and systems such as:

· Heater vessel

· Burner

· Blower

· Fire tubes

· Fuel-supply system

· Instrumentation

· Valve & piping

· Skid and steel structures

Oil heaters heats up oil by transferring temperature by fire tubes which are heater by burner. Fuel for burner can be either gas or gasoline, while other types of fuels are also applicable. Heater shall be designed for Zone 1 and Zone 2, so all instrumentation and electrical parts shall be explosion proof. Heater skid can be designed to accommodate pumps and fuel tank for convenient operation in oilfield. Crude oil heaters are widely applied in Early Production Facilities.

Crude oil heater is designed as per ASME standard or other regulatory standards, and usually made from carbon steel. Electrical parts sometimes are required to comply with ATEX certification requirements, while different countries have different requirements for combustion systems.  Crude oil heaters usually work under low pressure. Crude oil heater vessel and main piping are insulated to maintain crude temperature and safety reasons. Manway of the crude oil heater shall be designed as per code & standards and allow easy access to the heater internals. Usually there are two manways in vessel body to allow access in many sections of the vessel. Dimensions of the crude oil heater and thermal efficiency shall be designed as per flowrate and other working conditions.
